Classic Greece in Action, 6 days

We begin our day with visits to Mycenae and Epidaurus. Enter the ancient citadel of Mycenae through the iconic Lion Gate and wander among ruins that inspired Homer’s epics. Marvel at the massive Cyclopean walls and visit the nearby tholos tombs, including the famed Treasury of Atreus.

We continue to Epidaurus to experience its superbly preserved third-century BCE theater, celebrated for its flawless acoustics. The surrounding sanctuary, dedicated to Asklepios, offers a peaceful setting recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the afternoon, we switch to adventure with a refreshing sea-kayaking tour from Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece. Paddle out to the tiny Bourtzi fort, then along the old town’s shoreline beneath its historic fortifications, with the Palamidi fortress towering above. Following the coast under Akronauplia’s cliffs, we enjoy sweeping views of dramatic rock formations and lush vegetation crowned by ancient walls.

Sea Kayaking Details

Early in the morning, we continue into a lesser known yet deeply inspiring mountain region in central Peloponnese, famous for its historic villages such as Dimitsana, Stemnitsa, and Karytaina. Today’s adventure is a hike through the magnificent Lousios Gorge—a perfect blend of nature and history.

We follow forested trails that run parallel to and cross over the Lousios River, visiting cliff-side monasteries that seem to hang suspended above the gorge. The hike concludes at the archaeological site of Ancient Gortys, one of the most atmospheric sites in Greece, set beside the rushing river once known as the Gortynios.

After enjoying a traditional Greek picnic lunch, we continue our journey to Olympia.

Distance: 80Km, about 1,5 hours’ drive.

Hike Details: 5km, we descend from 670m to 370m to Iron Bridge, then ascend to 550m at Prodomos Monastery to descend at 325m, heading to Ancient Gortys.

The archaeological site of Olympia is one of the largest and most beautiful in Greece. With our guide, we walk through a serene valley of wild olive and plane trees toward the ancient ruins. Passing beneath the towering temple columns, we feel the awe of Olympian history come to life.

We explore the Sanctuary of Zeus and the excellent archaeological museum. Given Olympia’s importance, we enjoy a comprehensive guided tour followed by some free time to soak in the site’s unique ambience.

In the afternoon, we continue toward Patra and cross into western Greece via the impressive Rio–Antirrio Bridge, often called the “Little Dardanelles.” Afterward, we drive through the charming coastal town of Nafpaktos and follow a scenic shoreline route until we reach Delphi.

A historic and inspiring hike that blends the magic of nature with the mystery of ancient temples awaits us. We follow the ancient footpath once used by Pan’s worshippers as they journeyed between Delphi and the Corycean Grotto—now part of the E4 European trail.

Starting from the Livadi plateau at 1,200 meters, we descend through the forested slopes of Mt. Parnassos toward Delphi. Along the way, sweeping views open over the valley of olive trees, the Corinthian Gulf, and the distant Peloponnese mountains. We pause for a picnic in a traditional sheep barn near the Cave of Pan before continuing toward the sanctuary.

Upon arriving in Delphi, we explore the archaeological site and museum with a professional guide. Highlights include the Treasury of the Athenians, the Temple of Apollo, and masterpieces such as the Bronze Charioteer and the statue of the athlete Aghias—treasures that make Delphi a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We drive across the wide Thessalian plain to Kalambaka, a small town nestled at the foot of the Meteora rocks. In this remote corner of Thessaly lies a striking and majestic landscape, rightly famed as one of the wonders of the East. Towering above Kalambaka, the Meteora monasteries cling dramatically to the sheer rock pinnacles, creating an unforgettable sight.

Take in breathtaking views from the top of the rocks as our professional local guides share the history and geological significance of Meteora. Our hiking tour begins at St. Nicholas Monastery in the village of Kastraki, following the old footpaths once used by the monks, winding between the towering rock formations. We pass beneath the ruined Pantocrator Monastery on the north face of Dupiani Rock, then enter the lush heart of the forest to reach the restored Monastery of Ipapanti and the nearby ruins of St. Dimitrios. From here, the trail climbs gently upward, leading us to the clifftop monasteries of Varlaam and Great Meteoro, where we visit one of these remarkable sanctuaries.

Our descent back to Kastraki follows another ancient monastic path, passing the cave of St. George Mandila, famous for the colorful scarves climbers hang there each year.
