How to get around Istanbul
Transportation options to/from the airport
The city is served by air from two airports. Ataturk International Airport, the main airport of the city, serves the European side and is located 40 km from the city center, in the Yesilkoy area. Thessaloniki and Athens have direct flight connections. From the airport, transfer to the city is via metro (line M1A, red line), airport shuttle bus, or public buses. Alternatively, use a taxi. Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, which serves the Asian side, is located at a distance of 45 km from the city center.
Public Transport
The city has an extensive public transit and transport network. Move around by metro (for very specific distances) or by city buses. The tram emerges as the fastest way to get around. It crosses the city and reaches as far as the suburbs, with stops at central points of the city. Alternatively, choose the mini buses (dolmus) for the city and its suburbs, train, passenger ferries (sailing in the Golden Horn and Bosphorus), and taxis (with the meter turned on). Finally, the city is also great for lovely walks on foot.
