How to get around Monemvasia
Transportation options to and from the airport
Access to Monemvasia is by car. The distance from Athens is 300 km (duration approximately 3.5 hours) and from Thessaloniki, it is 800 km (duration approximately 9 hours). Alternatively, you can reach Monemvasia using the KTEL intercity buses.
During the summer months, there is a ferry service from Piraeus, and the total journey takes about 6 hours.
However, you can also travel by air to Kalamata International Airport, either from Athens Airport (duration approximately 55 minutes) or from Thessaloniki Airport (duration approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes).
Kalamata Airport is 168 km away from Monemvasia (duration approximately 2.5 hours). Access to and from the airport can be made by rental car.
Public Transportation
No vehicles circulate within the Castle Town. During the summer months, parking on the road leading to the gate is particularly difficult due to increased tourist traffic. The best solution is to leave your car in the New Town of Monemvasia and take the bus, which runs routes up to the Castle entrance.
