A 7-Day Catholic Pilgrimage Through the Peloponnese

We drive along the Saronic Gulf, crossing the Corinth Canal into the Peloponnese to reach Ancient Corinth. St. Paul lived and labored here for 18 months, founding a vibrant Christian community. We walk through the ancient forum and stand before the Bema (Judgment Seat) of Gallio, reflecting deeply on Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians and his Hymn to Love (1 Cor. 13). Following Holy Mass in the area, we enjoy a lunch at a traditional local tavern. On our way to Nafplio, we stop briefly at the ancient port of Cenchreae, from where Paul set sail for Syria (Acts 18:18). We arrive in picturesque Nafplio for check-in at our 4-star hotel. After breakfast, we explore the historic town of Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece. We then visit Ancient Mycenae, the citadel of King Agamemnon, and the ancient Theater of Epidaurus, famous for its perfect acoustics. Visiting these classical monuments provides a striking historical context: we reflect on how the Light of the Gospel brought hope and salvation to the pagan Greco-Roman world. We gather for a delicious traditional lunch at a regional tavern. In the late afternoon, we return to Nafplio for free time, prayer, or strolling through the marble-paved alleys. Dinner at the 4-star hotel and overnight in Nafplio.

We depart south toward Sparta and ascend to the medieval fortress city of Mistras (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Perched on the slopes of Mount Taygetos, Mistras was the last stronghold of the Byzantine Empire. We walk among its silent medieval churches, admiring exquisite Byzantine frescoes that express the profound theological devotion of the era. Following our tour, we enjoy a lunch featuring local Peloponnesian specialties at a traditional tavern. We then take a scenic drive north through the Peloponnesian countryside to Patras, the gateway to Western Europe. Check-in at our 4-star hotel in Patras. Dinner at the hotel restaurant and overnight.

A day of deep apostolic reverence. We visit the grand Cathedral of St. Andrew in Patras, built near the exact site of the Apostle’s crucifixion on an X-shaped cross. As the brother of St. Peter, St. Andrew holds a central place in Catholic-Orthodox unity; we venerate his holy relics and the sacred cross of his martyrdom. Your Spiritual Director will guide a prayer reflection and celebrate Holy Mass at a serene venue. We then share a hearty lunch at a traditional local tavern in Patras. The afternoon is free for personal devotion and quiet reflection along the sea. Dinner at the 4-star hotel and overnight in Patras.

We depart Patras and ascend into the dramatic Aroania Mountains toward Kalavryta. We visit the Mega Spileon (Great Cave) Monastery, one of the oldest monastic sanctuaries in Greece, built into a sheer cliff face. Here, we contemplate the endurance of monastic prayer through centuries of trials. After exploring the sanctuary, we gather for an authentic mountain lunch at a traditional tavern. In the afternoon, we take a comfortable drive back to Athens, checking into our 4-star hotel. In the evening, we gather for a special farewell dinner at the hotel restaurant, giving thanks for the spiritual graces received during our journey.

Following breakfast at the hotel, and depending on your flight schedule, a final traditional lunch will be arranged before departure. Your Mazi coach and driver will transfer your group directly to Athens International Airport for your return flight home. You depart Greece renewed in spirit, carrying the light of St. Paul’s preaching and the blessing of St. Andrew back to your home parishes.
