Itinerary
Arrive to Karpenisi
Arrival in Thessaloniki or Athens, pick up the 4x4 vehicles, and briefing on the itinerary by a local guide. Departure for Karpenisi. Arrival, hotel check-in, and free time to explore the beautiful picturesque village. Overnight stay.
Monastery of Proussos, hike to the Black Cave and "Panta Vrechei" gorge
Today is dedicated to the beauty of Evrytania. Karpenisi, with its unique microclimate, has the cleanest air in Greece and offers many mixed and asphalted routes in the wider area, making it an ideal destination for 4x4 enthusiasts of all ages. We will visit the monastery of Proussos, continue with a light hike to the Black Cave, and if weather conditions allow, we will reach the famous "Panta Vrechei" gorge. Dinner at a traditional tavern with trout from local fish farms. Overnight stay.
Kremaston Lake boat tour. 4X4 road trip to the area
Water is the main feature of our day. We will explore the Kremaston Lake, the largest artificial lake in Greece, which holds the title of the cleanest lake in Europe and the 5th cleanest in the world! (We recommend a one-hour boat tour.) Using the lakeside dirt roads, we will see the historic arched bridge of Manolis, beautiful, picturesque villages, and traditional watermills that once served as natural laundries powered by the force of water. Overnight stay.
Arrival to Lake Plastira by off road with the 4x4 vehicles
We bid farewell to Karpenisi and cross Agrafa, a lesser-known but stunningly beautiful area. Driving on narrow roads, both asphalt and dirt, we will reach an altitude of 1700 meters and stop at Lake Plastira. The landscape is breathtaking as the beautiful lake is surrounded by tall, forested mountains, and the area is considered a "paradise" for nature lovers. We recommend a canoe ride on the lake, a visit to a nearby winery, or a stroll through the Botanical Garden. Overnight stay.
Arrival to Tzoumerka. Visiting Theodoriana village and the famous Souda waterfalls
Our direction today is towards Tzoumerka. Tzoumerka, or the Athamanian Mountains, is one of the largest mountain ranges in western Greece. It spans the prefectures of Ioannina and Arta and encompasses a collection of beautiful villages. Wildly beautiful landscapes, with stone-built houses, monasteries, and churches perched on cliffs and caves. Rivers, gorges, and waterfalls create a uniquely exciting setting for mountain lovers and nature enthusiasts of all kinds. Today, we will visit the village of Theodoriana, known for its famous Souda waterfalls, and then continue to Voulgareli. Overnight stay.
Tzoumerka, Melissourgoi, waterfalls, Kalarrytes and Syrrako village
We continue exploring Tzoumerka, traversing mixed routes of asphalt and dirt, reaching the twin waterfalls of 100 and 80 meters in height on our way to the picturesque Kalarrytes, built on the edge of a steep ravine leading to the Kalarrytikos River at an altitude of 1,200 meters. We will arrive at Syrrako, a village clinging to the rocks, offering a uniquely beautiful landscape not only for its remarkable architecture but also because cars are not allowed in the village! Overnight stay.
Heading through Zagorochoria by off road route
We bid farewell to Tzoumerka and head towards the Zagori villages. We will cross the Arachthos River and admire the stunning Plaka Bridge (built in 1866 and reconstructed in 2019), which is the largest single-arched bridge in the Balkans and the third largest in Europe. We reach the city of Ioannina, take a short tour, and arrive in the Zagori villages in the afternoon. Overnight stay.
Visiting Aristi, Papingo, Vikos and Monodendri villages. Stone Forest in the Vikos–Aoos Geopark (UNESCO) and viewpoint of Vikos gorge
Today is dedicated to the Zagori villages: Aristi, Papingo, and Vikos. We recommend rafting on the Voidomatis River, swimming in the natural pools (Ovires) of Papingo, or participating in the preparation of a traditional Zagori pie. In the afternoon, after Monodendri, we will visit the Stone Forest in the Vikos–Aoos Geopark (UNESCO), one of the most unusual and beautiful places in Greece! It resembles a forest of stones, with structures formed from thinly layered limestones within a real forest composed of oaks and maples.
We continue to a viewpoint to enjoy the Vikos Gorge. It is a breathtaking spot, offering views of Greece's Grand Canyon, which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the deepest gorge in the world in terms of length-to-width-to-height ratio (total length close to 11 kilometers, with the depth exceeding 1,000 meters in many places). Overnight stay.
Metsovo to Kalambaka
We depart for Central and Eastern Zagori, heading to Metsovo, a unique scenic route. We arrive in this beautiful village built amphitheatrically on the forested slopes of Pindos at an altitude of 1,200 meters and continue to Kalambaka. Overnight stay.
Meteora rocks. Visiting the monasteries. Depart for Thessaloniki or Athens
Visit the imposing Meteora. This is a complex of dark-colored sandstone rocks that rise outside Kalambaka. Built on the tops of some of the rocks are monasteries, making it the second most important monastic complex in Greece after Mount Athos. (Today, only six of the original 30 monasteries are operational, and since 1988, they have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list). We bid farewell to Greek nature and take the road back home.
- The selected off road routes are approachable to all 4x4.
- There is full briefing and guiding throughout the journey on any possible topic: History, Nature, Tradition, Customs, Culture, Food, Night Life etc
- Local cuisine and products are selected.
