Vitina - Dimitsana
Breakfast. Today, you will visit the village of Dimitsana. Built like a heart of buildings on two hills at the start of the Lousios Gorge, Dimitsana, 11 km north of Stemnitsa, is a charming medieval village. This small place played an important role in the country’s struggle for self-determination. Its Greek school, founded in 1764, was an important hotbed for the ideas that led to the uprisings against the Turks. Its students included Bishop Germanos of Patra and Patriarch Gregory V, who was hanged by the Turks in retaliation for the Tripoli massacre. The village also had a number of gunpowder factories and a branch of the secret Filiki Eteria (friendly society), where the Greeks met to discuss the revolution. Today, this sleepy village is the center of hikers in the summer and is full of ski weekends in the winter. Overnight stay in Vitina hotel.
